Review

The Finnish folk-music scene is moving into a new phase at the end of the century, one where art music is more and more intertwined with traditional roots, and where composition becomes central to the "folk process." At the center of this is Troka, an all-acoustic ensemble that has brought together the best of folk and formality. They can be elegant or exuberant, creating subtle shifts in mood or driving changes in tempo. Master musicians all, they are further strengthened by some of the best composers in the Finnish music scene (and composers not limited to "folk"). Harmonium player and pianist Timo Alakotila gives us romantic ballads ("Sand"), driving dances ("Sprout"), and a dramatic work originally written for accordionist Maria Kalaniemi ("Angskarsmenuett"). Fiddler Ville Ojanen contributes his jumping "Summer Night Twist" and a dark and punchy "Sodoma." Fiddler Matti Makela's "Hardanger" is bright and airy, while his "Ring Dance" offers a unique Kaustinen style with a jazzy touch. The album is expanded with the accordion of Minna Luoma and the bass of Myllykangas, masters of their craft. This ensemble epitomizes the new music ethos in Finland, to learn from the tradition but never be held back. --Louis Gibson
