Review

Many artists who achieve greatness inspire comparisons, but Senegalese Wasis Diop is valued for creating music unlike any other. Eloquent and polished, foreign but familiar, Diop's sound synthesizes rock, funk, West African chant, ambient electronics, and acoustical music. He is daring without being alienating. Whether he sings with his rich, sexy voice about Soweto or "Oh, my heart! Oh, my answering machine!" the sound is meaningful. His interpretation of the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" is an example of the unique musical language Diop speaks that only requires listening to understand. --Cristina Del SestoWasis Diop is a great internationalist, like Peter Gabriel, Ray Lema, or the members of Afro Celt Sound System; he merges global influences to create something entirely new and distinctly his own. On "Toxu," his second American release, Senegal born Diop joins together elements of rock, funk, West African chant, duets with Japanese and French singers, ambient electronics, and delightful passages played on acoustic instruments. This is not music for strict traditionalists, it is music that takes chances and forms new alliances. Joining Wasis Diop on this CD is veteran producer/keyboardist Wally Badarou, percussion wizard Steve Shehan, and a cast of singers and players from five continents.
