Review

An indie-rock supergroup fielding members of the Make-Up and Royal Trux, Weird War boasts some of the most talented, intriguing, and wayward musicians in the last 20 years of alternative rock. Such a combination is far from a foolproof recipe for rock & roll nirvana. Royal Trux guitarist Neil Hagerty has had more than his fair share of experimental off-days, while, arguably, ex-Make-Up frontman Ian Svenonius's gospel shtick is increasingly more about reliving past glories than taking the form anywhere new. Thankfully, here, on their debut album, it all comes together.

The opening "Baby It's The Best" is a fantastic burst of greasy, sleazy rock & roll that could have strutted onto the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street and been one of the highlights. Throughout, Hagerty's guitar playing is still gleefully unregimented. It flows from his amp in glorious waves of sound that encompass everything from good-time boogie rock & roll to shrieking improv experiments, poured through a floorful of effects pedals. Meanwhile, the lusty "Who's Who" breaks the question of sexual orientation down into a sweet hipster yowl: "If you're in the navy/ Or if you're making babies/ You gotta know who's who." Against all odds, Weird War scores a coherent victory. --Louis PattisonOriginally conceived as an artistic movement, Weird War turned to music and terror when the static medium proved unsuitable. Weird War features Ian Svenonius and Michelle Mae from the Make-Ups as well as Neil Michael Hagerty.
