Review

Zebra Junction's debut album, "Orange Porridge", was born fireside in a rustic, snow covered cabin nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. A blending of styles, a mixture of acoustic & electric sounds, influenced by the likes of MMW, Phish, Pink Floyd, Charles Mingus, the Beatles and Gillian Welch. This album rapidly takes the listener from the cabin down in to the bowels of the city (Emma Baits). Then onto the back porch for some down home sounds (Lightning For Now). Flirt with a waitress in the diner (Waitress Blues) while free jazz drifts down from the bandstand (Skinny Dancing). Spin and swirl within strands of DNA towards the ocean deep (Shelter). Cruise down the road (Beamer Boogie) into the night under a full moon (Dance Tonight). When morning light creeps over the hills (Daybreak) head back up to the cabin for solace and come full circle again (Cabin Jam). Three musicians constantly trading instruments and messing with the mix. A curious fascination with childrens' instruments. A wealth of textures and sounds created with handmade/modified instruments. Recorded in downtown Denver with talented guest musicians, masterful mixing and great production. A feast for headphone enthusiasts. Life works in funny colors and weird odors, hence orange porridge.
