Review

Starting with the tune "Last Night Mark Eitzel Saved My Life," Mr. Fancypants thoroughly chronicles a difficult journey through the throes of a doomed relationship. The brief nod to Eitzel, lead singer of the American Music Club, is an appropriate opening to the CD. "There's a real joy both in articulating pain and in hearing it articulated for you," explains Ad. "I really feel that songs like these make you feel less alone. Eitzel's ability to give a voice to heartbreak and keep a sense of humor about it is something I've always aspired to, and hopefully that shows on this record." His listeners will find that it does.

A founding member of Boston perennials Miles Dethmuffen and Permafrost, Ad has honed his songwriting to perfection on Mr. Fancypants exhibiting an acute sense of despair masked in his signature upbeat veneer. A prime example is the bouncy "Bay of Fundy." The catchy tune seems like simple pop until the title destination is revealed to be the singer's last. It's this duality that prompted Boston Magazine to comment, "Ad Frank has a wiseass knack for pairing brooding lyrics with solid, catchy pop-rock tunes. Even a disgruntled song can put a spring in your step."
