Review

With If You Happy With, You Need Do Nothing, Alfie seem set on becoming the latest group of young scallywags to come slouching out of Manchester, set on turning the music world upside down. Collecting all the tracks from their first three vinyl-only single releases ("alfie EP," "Bookends," and "Montevideo") plus two new tracks, If You Happy With places Alfie up there with fellow Mancunian upstarts such as the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Stone Roses, and Oasis. Imagine a more languid take on that refried 1960s vibe that the Manchester scene pumped full of attitude and took out dancing: "2 Up 2 Down" is Arthur Lee's Love jostling with the Lovin' Spoonful over who gets to use the trumpet, while "Manor House Farm" sounds like Tim Buckley in a sunshine-flooded Salford. Alfie are a little bit of summer and a whole lot of Baggy; only this time, it's wearing sandals. --Billie SwiftLong awaited full length release for Twisted Nerve recording artists and tour mates of Jim O'Rourke, Sigur Ros and Badly Drawn Boy. The album is a collection of the best tracks from the first three Alfie EPs, plus two previously unavailable tracks. 2001 XL release.
