Review

You can say one thing about Amy Rigby: Whether cowering in the dreads of despair or rejoicing in newly sprung reverie, she's the same clever, cynical and exceedingly straightforward songwriter we have come to appreciate since her 1996 solo debut, Diary of a Mod Housewife. On record number five, the 40-something New Yorker once again turns life's observations, both humdrum and vital, into tightly wound, three-minute pop diaries. In "Like Rasputin," Rigby staggers to her feet from the evil man just in time to grapple with "The Trouble With Jeanie," her new husband's peach of an ex-wife. As usual, she finds levity in any situation, and this time she fanaticizes about "Dancing With Joey Ramone," calls out the absurdities of "Needy Men" and explains how the woman in "The Year of the Fling" was "running fast from the past (and) hell bent on having a blast." Like any great author, Rigby is content enough in her craft to expose the imperfections as comfortably as the triumphs. And as with any great songwriter, she always manages to pull it off. --Scott HolterRenowned songwriter Amy Rigby's fifth album finds the singer, who began her solo career as the Mod Housewife, bringing it all back home. Hailed for her keen eye and sharp wit in tracing the vagaries and victories of modern romance, her new release finds Rigby promising "I Don't Want To Talk About Love No More." But, of course, she does - getting to the heart of the matter and the punch line in due course.
