Review

Atlanta-based producer/remixer Chris Brann is without question one of the most prolific and far reaching of today's electronic music artists. His Wamdue Kids, Wamdue Project, Ananda Project and P'taah incarnations, as well as his work under his own name, have all garnered critical acclaim including a massive international smash with Wamdue Project's "King of My Castle" which sold over 2 million copies worldwide in 2000.

Brann's decidedly abstract and classical approach to making music produces distinctively rhythmic landscapes that are about the limitless possibilities of sound, not musical apartheid. His aural reconstructions of Everything But The Girl, KD Lang, Bebel Gilberto, Thomas Newman (`Six Feet Under') Charles Webster, and Tweaker feat. David Sylvian, have hugely increased the demand for his productions and remixes, providing an outlet for his extraordinary scope.

Following on from 2000's Release and 2001's remix collection Re-Release, Morning Light is a sumptuous assemblage encapsulating Brann's broad talents well as a roster of Atlanta-based and international artists. Resident muses Heather Johnson and Terrance Downs return sharing vocal duties with house diva Lydia Rhodes, ethereal siren Marta Gazman, Sylvia Gordon (of electronic jazz outfit Kudu and featured vocalist / bassist for Brann's P'TAAH project) and lithe chanteuse Nicola Hitchcock (formerly of UK act Mandalay). Atlanta-based instrumentalists Julius Speed (keyboards), Ede Wright (guitar), Genoa Mungin and Kima Moore (percussion), Kebbi Williams (sax) and Darryl Freeman (bass), solidify the group's epic levels of skill and synchronicity.

Songs like the sparkling "Kiss Kiss Kiss", "Rain Down," the cosmic jazz inflected "ICU" and the spiritually-soaked "Secrets" are effervescent reflections while the stark Marvin Gaye-inspired "Justice, Mercy" and elegant lead single "I Hear You Dreaming" are evocative meditations peppered with warm textures that are contemplative and engrossing. But, it is the supple "Suite Dreams," the earnest woeful "The One" and the penetrating sullen anthem "Can You Find the Heart" that evoke the deepest aural imagery.Second full-length album from Ananda Project, aka Atlanta-based producer/remixer Chris Brann. Morning Light features appearances by ex-Mandalay vocalist Nicola Hitchcock, house diva Lydia Rhodes, and Sylvia Gordon (of electronic jazz act Kudu) plus a full band of crack instrumentalists.
