Review

The songs on this CD/tape, were created to be a loving support for anyone facing a major transition in life, whether it be the death of a loved one, the death of self, the death of a relationship, a dream, or a way of being. Serenade At The Doorway takes us on a journey that supports us in accepting the emotions that we experience as human beings and at the same time reminds us of the larger vision that brings wisdom, comfort and inspiration. The beauty of Ann Mortifee's voice, coupled with the passion and poetry of her music and words makes this a rare and uplifting recording. Serenade At The Doorway is being widely appreciated as a powerful resource in the area of hospice care. Hospice and medical personnel have found that the music opens up a depth and poignancy of communication when it is shared by a grieving family or a family dealing with the life-threatening illness of one of its members. The tape/CD proceeds as a dialogue, with songs alternating between the voice of the personal self, dealing with matters of loss and mortality, and a voice calling to the eternal wisdom that dwells in each of us. This ageless voice provides guidance for working through the core issues stirred by the fact that even though we are mortal, we love, and are wounded. Healing is possible, and occurs, when we are able to see and understand our crises from a larger context.

ARTIST/BAND: Ann Mortifee is one of Canadas most talented singer/songwriters. Ann Mortifee was born in Zululand, South Africa, November 30, 1947. She spent her first years on a sugar farm there and came to Canada as a young child. As a teenager in Vancouver, she began singing with the legendary Josh White after her first public appearance which was at a local coffeehouse. That first performance was precipitated by a dare put to her by some of her classmates at school.

Anns singing career now spans more than three decades during which she has performed with such notable artists as Hagoode Hardy, Harry Belafonte,Ramsey Lewis Michele LeGrand, Bobby McFerrin and John Denver.

Ann is now known as one of Canada's most unique and outstanding performing artists whose strengths lie in many different areas. She continues to use them all, while constantly challenging herself to explore the unfamilar.

Known throughout the world for her passionate and honest performances, Ann has released eight albums, written three musicals, and several ballet and film scores. She has worked as a keynote speaker for conferences on such concerns as the use of creativity in healing, sexual abuse, death and dying, environmental and womens issues. She received the Order of Canada in 1992 for her outstanding contribution to the healing and performing arts in Canada.

The whole body of Ann's work deals with the mystery, difficulty and extraordinary opportunity of what it means to be a human being. Ann has facilitated workshops throughout Canada, Europe and the United States. They are a healing journey that awakens deep creativity, passion and aliveness. Her work with the voice is known for its unique, innovative and transformative qualities. Using her understanding of the energetic body, or chakra system, and its relationship to the physical body, she assists people in feeling, perhaps for the first time, the power and clarity available when one is energetically aligned within the body. Through breath-work,movement exercises, visualization and song, Ann supports individuals and groups, to experience and celebrate, their capacity to live and love, more passionately.
