Review

Putting gospel, soul, and club music on one album is usually a recipe for disaster, but former Sounds of Blackness lead vocalist Ann Nesby stands up to the challenge. Her sophomore effort is a luscious mix of the aforementioned styles, strengthened by the sophisticated production of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Chicago house-music legend Steve "Silk" Hurley, Gerald Isaac, and others. While an inspired cover of Brainstorm's "Lovin' Is Really My Game" and other dance-oriented tunes are engaging pulse-pumpers, true inspiration is found in Nesby's slow ballads and gospel numbers. Among its 13 strong selections, the album's crown jewel has got to be the title track, a hip-grinding, soul-stirring duet with the incomparable Al Green. Don't let yourself down and fall in love with Ann Nesby today. --Rebecca Levine
