Review

Bernadette Peters has earned her distinction through hard work, sparkling talent, and a dizzying range of roles, yet one never feels she's "stretching out" beyond her abilities. This Grammy-nominated album from 1996 saw Peters strutting her tough kewpie-doll charm on everything from Elton John and Lyle Lovett, to (her favorite) Stephen Sondheim and Rodgers & Hammerstein. As a "pop" artist, Peters finds the soul of showmanship in even a wistful number like the Dylan song of the album title (a much less coy version than Maria Muldaur's with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band).
