Review

The only Christmas album ever recorded by this much-loved--and tragically short-lived--singer contains some of his most majestic vocal performances, spotlighting qualities only hinted at on his pop releases. The disc--augmented for CD release by the never-before-released "Christmas Auld Lang Syne"--is given over largely to traditional hymns that bring the season's spiritual meaning to the fore. Darin performs pristine versions of "Ave Maria," "Holy Holy Holy," and a brace of other sanctified songs, punctuating the proceedings with renditions of more uptempo gospel-flavored numbers like "Go Tell It on the Mountain."
