Review

Not to be confused with Veloso's self-titled 1967 debut--an essential record, by the way--this 1986 platter finds the Brazilian pop superstar in a contemplative mood. It's almost all acoustic, unaccompanied and, in contrast to the whimsical leftist pop of Veloso's early years, often dour. There's still a hint of the cultural cross-pollination he executed so well as a leader of the late-'60s tropicalia movement--check the funnily classicist medley of "Billie Jean" and "Eleanor Rigby"--but Caetano Veloso is mostly stately and mature. That's not necessarily a bad thing; the record has its moments of beauty and grace, and it's typically smart. But there's nothing nearly so dizzying as his late '60s work. --Keven McAlesterRecorded in 1985 in New York, this album features Brazilian singer and songwriter Caetano Veloso, mostly accompanying himself with an acoustic guitar, and it is a triumph of understatement and nuance. Veloso is a poet--the words are in Portuguese but are translated in the booklet--and delivers the words with an uncanny sense for shadings, and impeccable phrasing. This might be hard to gauge in his own compositions but becomes clearer in his tributes to Antonio Carlos Jobim, the bossa nova master, (with the medley "Dindi/Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amor"), and to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Michael Jackson (in a wickedly clever medley including "Nega Maluca," "Brazilian Song," "Billie Jean," and "Eleanor Rigby"). --Fernando Gonzalez
