Although Charles Gayle (b. 1939) is primarily known for his fiery prowess on the saxophone, his first love at age 7 was in fact the piano. Time Zones, Gayle's first solo piano album of all original material, is a deep, personal journey inspired by key figures in piano jazz history, from James P. Johnson and Art Tatum to Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor.
