Review

Charley Pride's first four albums for RCA/Victor all bear the moniker "Country," as if his audience needed the reminder. But by 1969 Pride was riding a wave of smash singles that would bring him commercial success only equaled by Elvis Presley for RCA. From that year, Koch has wisely reissued Pride's sixth RCA album, striking for its depth of material and the baritone's lush, irresistible tone. No novelty numbers here, no predictable covers, just gorgeous, heartbreaking country song after song. Jack Clement's production is flawless and understated, distinctive for the piano and warm, strolling electric guitar runs. While there's a desperate need for a thorough overview of Pride's music--RCA's bumbling Essential entry is merely evidence of how unsatisfying a compilation can be--this vintage 1969 album makes for a fine introduction to Pride's classic period. --Roy Kasten
