Review

Possible Cube is the most consistently engaging recording that Rob Mazurek has released since he transformed himself from a hard-bop standard-bearer into the brass-bearing MVP of Chicago's genre-scorning avant-sound set. Besides playing with space-funk merchants Isotope 217 and the Chicago Underground Trio (which has previously billed itself as a duo and an orchestra), Mazurek has played his cornet on albums by Tortoise, Sam Prekop, and Jim O'Rourke. On this record he posits an alternate universe where the radioactive drones of Miles Davis's early-'70s recordings morph into Dr. Who-like electronic environments and Don Cherry pitches his tent in the Brazilian rain forest. Bassist Noel Kupersmith and drummer Chad Taylor lend coherence to Mazurek's eclectic vision by anchoring his lyrical flights with swinging grooves and levitating his more abstract forays with billowing, textured surfaces. Pinch hitter Jeff Parker abandons his guitar on two tracks to contribute sulfurous, percolating organ eruptions--he should play the instrument more often. --Bill Meyer
