Review

Berry's first album was in one sense a cobbled-together job typical of the early rock era, with a number of singles sitting beside various not-ready-for-AM castoffs. Further, this budget-line abridgement makes it choppier. But After School Session, possibly inadvertently, paints a good picture of Berry's music; not only are protest 45s such as "School Day" and "Too Much Monkey Business" on board, so are laid-back blues ("Wee Wee Hours," "Deep Feeling") and calypso ("Havana Moon"). Not as essential as his greatest-hits packages, but an intriguing and entertaining listen nonetheless. --Rickey Wright
