Review

Continental’s third full-length album, "What Was Gained From What Was Lost," was recorded in two sessions, first with Mark Panighetti of Boon Companion, and later with Daniel McKenzie of The Rum Diary. The album is the first to feature Escalante, whose guitar lines weave and duel with the other instruments to create a sound that’s more driven than their previous releases. “Ghost War” and “Light Out” surge steadily forward with layered and intertwining melodies. “August Ends” marks Continental’s second endeavor into vocals with Kimble singing over a chugging drone that explodes at its resolution. The songs express emotions through shifting dynamics in a way that will appeal to fans of Mogwai, Do Make Say Think, and the Album Leaf.
