Review

An electronic recording with a bit of a throwback feel (attributable to the use of analog synthesizers), Craig Padilla's second recording for the Spotted Peccary label exudes a straight-from-the-planetarium vibe that is liberally adorned with audio interpretations of pulsars, space winds, primordial ferment, and similar space-music touchstones. While no new ground is broken here, Padilla's technique is calming and attractive. "Robust atmospherics" might be the best way to describe Padilla's approach to this four-part, 71-minute wordless journey--an abstract collage of slowly shifting colors and benign, ethereal imagery. His soundscapes, while void of rhythmic undercurrents or traditional instrumentation, rarely have their empty spaces left unoccupied for long; Padilla typically fills them in with something, from bird emulations to audio vapor trail. On a few occasions, stillness might have been a better choice. The net effect is a little more drama and a bit less weightlessness, yet one that retains its appeal to space-music listeners (and to fans of John Serrie in particular). --Terry WoodTimeless and current, bold yet subtle, this release will interest all audiophile and high-end stereo users. This is new electronic music woven with vintage instrumentation.
