Review

A banned MTV video could be a blessing to any struggling new artist hoping to make a quick dash for notoriety. Witness "Hey Mister," the lead single from Custom's debut album. Despite a dusty trip-hop beat and lyrics that sound like they were made up by some hormone-afflicted teenager ("Hey mister, I really like your daughter / I'd like to eat her like ice cream"), the single quickly turned into a runaway success on the radio. Fortunately, New York-based singer-songwriter Duane Lavold, the man behind Custom, has more to offer elsewhere on Fast. Stitching together Beck's discarded grooves with Filter's buzz-saw guitars, and nervy lyrical twists that are uniquely his own, the erstwhile filmmaker explores themes of angst ("Morning Spank") and alienation ("Crawl") with equal measures of vulgarity and melody. --Aidin Vaziri
