Review

Cymande Renegades of Funk, with its unreleased tracks, "Bird," etc., is a beautifully remastered and sequenced best of album. This special package includes rare vintage photographs of the band, updated liner notes and plus their most famous hit tracks from all three original Cymande LPs, from 1972-1974. The hit track "Bra," kicks off the album in all it's remastered glory. The breaks, horns and basslines sound stunningly current. This album also includes tracks used in Spike Lee's movies, Crooklyn and 25th Hour.

Cymande, pronounced (sah-mahn-day), was an eight member group hailing from Jamaica and the West Indies. They met after moving to London, and were the first to record a fusion of funk, jazz, soul and reggae. Much ahead of their time, they landed at the epicenter of two major movements in music; Dance/Rare Groove, and Hip Hop. Grandmasterflash and Kool Herc dropped Cymande's breaks at South Bronx block parties. And some of the artists who famously sampled Cymande's great tracks include De La Soul, Biz Markie, The Fugees and MC Solar, etc. Cymande also played the Apollo to raves and toured the USA with Al Green in 1973. This band deserves this kind of hommage and more.
