Review

Grab this one. No other reggae singer--Bob Marley included--has spawned more imitators or is more loved than Brown, reggae's official crown prince. Sadly, time and tribulations have taken their toll on the voice of the 12-year-old singing prodigy who debuted in 1969 and grew up to be one of reggae's greatest artists. But that's no issue here, and Brown shows himself to be as devoted a Jah worshiper and freedom fighter as he is a lover. Words of Wisdom delivers him at his peak, with that warm, robust voice making magic of 12 emblematic compositions, and a constellation of Jamaican studio stars--among them Sly and Robbie, Dean Fraser, and Lloyd Parks--laying down air-tight instrumentals. Each one is a classic in this Joe Gibbs-Errol Thompson production: "So Jah Say," "Don't Feel No Way," "A True," "Ain't That Loving You," "Cassandra," "Love Jah," "Black Liberation," "Rasta Children," "Drifter," "Money in My Pocket," the title cut, and almost everyone's Brown favorite, "Should I." --Elena Oumano
