Review

The youngest of the Reno Brothers, Don Wayne is the one brave enough to pick up the banjo, the instrument that father Don mastered. Somewhere, papa is smiling because the junior Don knows his way around the five-string. On his first solo release, he offers 11 crisp instrumentals (and one vocal courtesy of wife Lori) in tribute to banjo heroes J.D. Crowe, Sonny Osborne, Allen Shelton, Ralph Stanley, and of course Don Reno. With brothers Dale (mandolin) and Ronnie (rhythm guitar) egging him on, Don Wayne shows tremendous versatility: His distinctive, inventive banjo playing highlights jazzy shuffles, blistering rags, and a ballad while he tastefully augments his deft plucking with turns on both acoustic and (Albert Lee-sounding) electric guitar. With remarkable records such as this under his belt, he'll be saluted himself one day. --Marc Greilsamer
