Review

Urb magazine might have tagged Dr. Israel as the "dub-reggae connection," but on Inna City Pressure, Israel is really the dub-everything connection--jungle, hip-hop, breakbeat, reggae. Israel tries his hand at all styles, mixing up a crazy hybrid animal in each song. Curiously, Israel's attempts at the most straightforward of the genres, like dub and reggae, fare the worst--his "Hey, mon" feels more like a shtick, partially because of weaker production techniques and an overdone politicized message. But when the producer tries his hand at the weirder end of electronic music, it sometimes turns out wonderful. You get the feeling that if Israel hasn't quite hit the nail on the head, with a little luck and perseverance, he'll eventually build the musical castle of his (and our) dreams--a place where musical boundaries cease to exist. --Tricia Romano
