Review

For a musician who learned his craft in nightclubs, the Doctor's track record with concert recordings is decidedly spotty. 1975's Hollywood Be Thy Name is a ragged document recorded at Willie Purple's in Los Angeles, though producer Bob Ezrin inserts a few studio tracks without apology or explanation. For every solid New Orleans number, such as "New Island Soiree," there are two misfires, including a bombastic cover of "Yesterday" and a proto-metal stomp with the misleading title, "Reggae Doctor." The sound quality is poor throughout, with the tape hiss on "Babylon" louder than the opening tom-tom beats. Slapdash in every way, Hollywood Be Thy Name sounds like a drug-induced meltdown. Check out 1997's vastly superior Trippin' Live instead. --Keith MoererA Great Reissue from the Rebbenack Archives from his Heyday Period in the Early 70's, Remastered for the '90's..
