Review

Drum Brothers' debut CD, Power of Rhythm, is an eclectic mix of world sounds. Several cuts, including “Power of Rhythm” and “Gratitude,” feature a West African sound with djembe and doun-doun drums, bells and shakers. “Continental Drift” and “Winds of the Heart” are based on Matthew's guitar grooves, with Michael's didgeridoo and Native American flute. Inspiration for “Ode to Hamza” came from a home-made tape of Hamza el Din, the great Nubian artist. “Humanah” and “Clavé Café” center on vocal themes with the percussion added later. Much of the CD's material, like “Merengue/Bell Heaven” and “Goatskin Hip Hop,” grew out of improvisation and live performances.
