Review

The Puerto Rico-born Edsel Gomez may not be as well known as such contemporaries as Danilo Perez or Michel Camilo, but his sideman work with David Sanchez and Don Byron always got the attention of the most devoted Latin jazz ears. On his American debut as a leader, he's joined by saxophonists Sanchez, Steve Wilson, Greg Tardy, and Miguel Zenon; clarinetist Byron; bassist Drew Gress; and drummer Bruce Cox. Compositionally, the selections are complex, rhythmically angular songs that highlight Gomez's dark and twisty keyboard lines, which are reminiscent of Don Pullen's pianisms, and are the musical equivalent of Picasso's cubist works. There's the bolero "Juan Tizol," a shout-out to his homeboy and Duke Ellington trombonist. "The Adoracion Variations" is a sensitive solo take on Eddie Palmieri's classic, while "Harmolodic Collage" is an avant-garde, interactive opus not unlike Ornette Coleman's work. This is 21st-century Latin jazz at its finest. --Eugene Holley, Jr."Accompanied by a world-class crew of improvisers, jazz pianist/composer Gomez showcases his deft touch and expansive musical vision with wholly satisfying results…" -BILL MILKOWSKI
