2003 compilation for the underrated soul vocalist features 18 tracks including her hits, 'What A Diff'rence A Day Makes' & 'Native New Yorker'. Soul Brother.Before There was Anita Baker Or Toni Braxton Or Cassandra Wilson There was Esther Phillips. Her First Label Deal Actually Came About Thanks to a Fellow Texan Catching a Club Appearance in the Early 60's....kenny Rogers, Whose Brother Signed her to his Lenox Label. After a Short Tenure, She Signed with the Mighty Atlantic Records. Her Voice was So Versatile that Even the Brains at Atlantic Records Just Didn't Know Exactly How to Market her Talents. Then in 1971, Creed Taylor Took her on to his Kudu Label and Finally Got her Into all the Right Places. She Scored a Top 20 Hit with "What a Difference a Day Makes", which Eventually Became a Disco Standard. Here is a Generous Helping of the Lady's Best Recordings to Round Out the Picture of a Tortured Soul who Rose above her Pain to Create Art that Lasts Longer Than her Mortal Years.
