Review

Free was a supergroup before there were such things. In fact, two of its members went on to form an acknowledged supergroup in Bad Company. Vocalist Paul Rodgers, along with guitar virtuoso Paul Kossoff, helped invent the prototype for '70s hard rock. The band peaked commercially with its first single, "All Right Now," and didn't get U.S. airplay again until three years later, after disbanding and then reuniting, with the stunning antidrug tract "Wishing Well" from their final LP, Heartbreaker. This 1975 compilation has always stumped Free fans, since it includes nothing from the reunion, excluding the aforementioned "Wishing Well," their finest moment. Which is why the two-disc Molten Gold truly presents the band at its best. --Bill Holdship
