Review

Producer Creed Taylor was never accused of leaving any rough edges on the 1970s recordings released by his CTI and Kudu labels, many of which are now being reissued for the first time on CD by Epic/Legacy. Guitarist Grant Green's The Main Attraction, originally released in 1976, could have benefited from a little more fire and a little less precision, as the normally captivating guitarist is almost buried under a cadre of New York session musicians. The album does showcase some tasty guitar soloing from Green, but it's in short supply. Fans of Green's classic albums--whether the jazz brilliance of Solid or the white-hot funkiness of Alive--will likely be disappointed that his fluid and soulful guitar style barely pokes through the slick production of this release. While the musicians here are solid--especially flutist Herbert Laws--the material is generally uninspired, and the album features only three lackluster tunes--the funky but bloated 19-minute title track, the dated-sounding "Future Feature," and the meandering blues of "Creature." CTI, with its trademark sound of heavily produced and orchestrated albums, did produce some gems, but unfortunately this isn't one of them. --Ezra Gale
