Review

What George Gershwin did for New York City, Guinga does for Rio de Janeiro in this extended song-cycle tribute to the famous Leopoldina train station, a place heavy with images from the artist's youth. Expanding on the scope of his last release, the prizewinning instrumental disc Cheio de Dedos, Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar, a.k.a. Guinga, adds legendary vocalists Chico Buarque and Nei Lopes to his impressive roster of musicians. The pair makes its collaborative debut on the dark and beautiful "Parfisal," which reflects on Brazil's rule by military junta. "Dos Anjos" begins the suite on a bittersweet note as harmonica great Toots Thielemans evokes a Nino Rota-style soundtrack in a paean to the innocence of childhood. The centerpiece of a disc filled with high points is the lushly orchestrated chorinho "Choro Perdido," arranged by pianist Leandro Braga and featuring Ze Nogueira waxing plaintive on soprano sax against a backdrop of strings. Guinga's reinvention of Brazilian popular music is so seductive, its sheer nerve rolls right by like a train in the night. --Bob Tarte
