Review

Jai Agnish makes indie rock for the '00s. Current indie rock isn't typified by bands like Superchunk or Guided By Voices; those bands are exemplary outfits that expand upon a sound that basically was worked out years ago. The indie rockers of today mix electronica and old-fashioned rock instruments like they just don't care; Beck isn't so much an influence as an ancestor. Agnish accompanies his sincere singing with not only gentle acoustic guitar, but also off-kilter rhythms and zany sound effects. There's a nice balance between the playful electronic stuff and the earnest vocals; the two keep each other in check. Some of the tracks are a little underdeveloped, but the album as a whole possesses both sonic charm and emotional weight. At times, Automata displays a fervent quality that evokes Neutral Milk Hotel. Agnish and NMH mainman Jeff Mangum both are Christian; maybe it's their faith that leads them to create such warm, uplifting music. --Fred CisternaFuturistic folk. Quirky drum machine programming, found sound sampling and acoustic guitar grounded in lo-fi influences.
