Review
After scoring a hit right out of the gate with her debut single, "Crush," Jennifer Paige called on the big guns for her follow-up. And so "These Days," Positively Somewhere's lead song, was cowritten by Phil Thornally, the former Cure bassist who put Natalie Imbruglia on the pop map in the late '90s. Sure enough, "These Days" has the platinum-plated attitude of something that's got "radio hit" written all over it. The rest of the album is surprisingly consistent considering that it was recorded all over the U.S. with 11 different producers. All the tracks share huge anthemic choruses you'll hate yourself for singing along with, and some oddball sonic touches that keep things interesting. "The Edge," for instance, boasts a nutty, rumbling bass line that's so weird it becomes completely addictive, while "Make Me" is laden with hooks. The least you can say for Paige is that she knows a catchy song when she hears it--and she'll make sure you hear it as well. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
