Review

When Joe Derrane appeared at the Washington Irish Folk Festival in the mid-'90s, the 64-year-old button accordionist hadn't recorded in 40 years. He caused such a sensation, however, that Green Linnet invited the Boston native into the recording studio with duet partner Felix Dolan on piano. Derrane reemerged with Give Us Another, an all-instrumental affair that explains the excitement his 78s created in Irish-music circles during the late '40s and early '50s. On the new recording's 34 traditional tunes, Derrane again displays his gift for ornamenting a melody with triplets and grace notes while maintaining a crisp articulation on the squeeze box. --Geoffrey Himes
