Review

A child prodigy in the Dallas country scene of the early '50s, Poovey, by then a Big "D" Jamboree regular, jumped right in behind Elvis in the mid-'50s with "Ten Long Fingers." An obscure recording then, the original, included here, is now viewed as quintessential Texas rockabilly. This carefully compiled collection of singles, (including some surprisingly strong early-'90s rockers), demos, home recordings, and live material examines a career that while modest, ended only with the singer's untimely death in 1998. Not that everything was prime: two ultracorny 1954 Christmas recordings of a 13-year-old Poovey are of strictly historical interest, and even some of the rockers don't make a compelling case for Poovey as underrated giant. Just the same, his heart, versatility, and personality were undeniable, and his Texas honky-tonk roots--showcased on a burning 1979 live version of Ray Price's "Pride"--were never far away. -Rich Kienzle Texas rockabilly hero "Groovey" Joe Poovey gets a much deserved career retrospective with "Greatest Grooves", a fantastic collection of his best rockabilly and honky tonk country recordings from 1954 to the present. Includes all of his early Dixie Records recordings, live recordings from the Big "D" Jamboree and Grapevine Opry, obscure rarities and even some fantastic recent recordings. Deluxe booklet with rare photos, a biography and discography.

This is the third disc in the acclaimed "Legends of the Big 'D' Jamboree" series from Dallas' Dragon Street Records.
