Review

John Forster records for the folk label Philo, but he's actually a cabaret parodist in the tradition of Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, and the Capitol Steps. Like most performers in this genre, Forster is very good when he's good but extremely annoying when he's not. Entering Marion has more misses than hits, but when it connects, it scores big time. Unlike most of his peers in the parody dodge, Forster is actually more skilled as a musician than as a lyricist. In fact, it's his pastiche of bombastic Teutonic music more than the words that makes his lampooning of modern German imperialism so witty. Unfortunately, too much of the album is given over to songs that try to wring double entendres out of Massachussetts road signs like "Entering Sharon" or "Entering Lawrence," or try to imagine Mozart as a boogie-woogie piano player. --Geoffrey Himes
