Bigger Than Yourself is prolific folk instrumentalist and singer John McCutcheon's sixth "family recording," as kids' discs are euphemistically described these days. All 15 of the songs were cowritten by McCutcheon and most of them find a clever, often witty, way to get across an uplifting lesson. The messages are made even more palatable by spirited, imaginative folk-rock arrangements that employ Tim O'Brien, Cheryl Wheeler, the Kennedys, Bobby Read, Jon Carroll, and a horn section. --Geoffrey Himes
