Review

Forget what you think you know about contemporary Detroit rock for a moment. If you can, ditch any recent associations with Motor City guitar music and the millennial garage rock explosion before you press play. Judah Johnson's fulllength debut, Kisses and Interrogation, needs your ears naked, your mind thirsty and your soul begging for an album that it can float on. This is one life vest of a record.

Kisses and Interrogation is threaded with Daniel's evocative songwriting that is equal parts precision and poetics. String and brass arrangements, mellotron, glockenspiel and a pedal steel add dynamic intensity. Kisses and Interrogation is as much a fusion of emotion and rationality as it is a logging of the conflict between the two. In its finer moments, Kisses and Interrogation acts as a bridge between the mind, the heart and the tongue of a group that speaks with one voice and doesn't shy away from taking bold jabs at being articulate.
