Review

What sets this album apart? The Hooks.

The Hooks and the Chops.

An “Inevitable” offering from one of the Northwest’s most popular singers, Julie Mains’ new solo album is as keen, fresh and inviting as a cold lemonade on a scorcher of a day. Just like Mains herself, the songs on this album are accessible, inventive, and provocative. Just when you think you have her figured out, something new comes along that will knock you on your ass.

This exciting new LP is Mains’ first solo effort – but this is no amateur hour. Mains’ band (Eddy Ferguson, Ricardo Valenzuela, Greg Boehme, Dave Chick) are clearly seasoned pros, and Mains herself has been performing since she was in single digits. Along with the smart and lively mix from Mains’ co-producer, Curtis Chandler, the tracks are witty, original and often unpredictable; at its most edgy, the songs offer hooks and chops that are a feast for the ears.

Some songs of note are girl groupie anthem "Rock Star Boyfriend" which is rumored to be about Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, “Mr. Right Now” about an unapologetic pick-up, “Beauty Queen” – a sadder-but-wiser alternative rock piece that warns of a manipulative woman, “Don’t Go” with a slow, sweetness that belies a theme of bitter desperation and resigned co-dependency, and “Fine China” where profound naughtiness and the double entendre reign supreme. The album offers a touch of raw emotion packaged in a polished, professional sound. It’s definitely a don’t-miss album – so don’t miss it!
