Review

Back in the day, the Jungle Brothers juggled roles as hip-house pioneers ("I'll House You") and conscious-rap members of the Native Tongues posse. V.I.P., produced by Propellerhead Alex Gifford, reflects a JBeez whose sights are trained on the dance floor--an approach that's certainly fun for casual listening, but which pretends that the chancy moves of the past (Stooges samples!) never existed. Lyrically, the Brothers stick to simple chants and tired boasts about their place in the rap firmament; a low point is reached with "Get Down," a tedious cut that leans too hard on its interpolation of Kool and the Gang's limp "Get Down on It" as a hook. Can they still rock the party? No doubt. But V.I.P. is more like potato chips than the B-boy bouillabaise the Jungle Brothers once served their guests. --Rickey Wright
