Review

Acoustic guitarist Ken Bonfield's third recording is a subdued, reflective affair conceived with cold nights and fireplaces in mind. The album's 13 tracks (though only 12 are mentioned in the liner notes) are mostly unaccompanied pieces performed on classical guitar that exude the requisite warmth and pensive resonance appropriate for the season. Three selections, in slightly reworked fashion, are borrowed from his previous albums: "The Passing" and "Wiseman's View" from Homecoming, and "Farewell" from Mystic Morning. Four others are gently realized holiday warhorses, from "Greensleeves" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" to "Silent Night" and the unacknowledged album-closer, "Auld Lang Syne." The rest reflect Bonfield's low-key comfort zone of quiet introspection and uncomplicated melodies. Anyone seeking awe-inspiring technique should look elsewhere, yet Bonfield succeeds in offering a pleasant audio diversion nicely suited for chilly holiday-season evenings. --Terry Wood
