Review

Some records get better as they progress. Kiss on the Breeze starts off with some weak line scans and hooks, picks up a little with Deal's humorous tale of becoming more like his dad as he matures ("My Father's Redneck"), and then takes off with "Can't Hold a Candle" (to her old flame). Here is a classic country comparison song ("I'm just an old sedan, he's a long black Caddy / Me I'm just a man, he was her sugar daddy") that works the metaphors magnificently through four minutes and thirty seconds. Later on, "Things I've Done for Love" and "A Thousand Pictures" make one once again wonder why Nashville settles for such lame tunes when Deal is grinding out these great ones. Lloyd Maines's perfect production can't mask Deal's lack of performance charisma, but Kiss on the Breeze can serve as a great source for anyone looking for country material that is (sorry) the real deal. --Michael Ross
