Review

Before recording their third studio album in 2002, Baltimore's Lake Trout was a decent if hardly essential band cast adrift on the jam circuit with songs that mixed together acoustic guitars and hip-hop rhythms. But with Another One Lost, the group finally hits its stride, delivering a record with real emotional punch. It surges with creativity, recalling the work of experimental rock visionaries like Radiohead and Mars Volta, and flaunting a set of gripping songs: "Say Something" soars with fractured drums and a haunting harmonica, the potent "Bliss" crackles with dense, menacing riffs, and the chilling title track is built out of scratchy acoustic tones and frontman Woody Ranere's sky-scraping Jeff Buckley-style falsetto. Another One Lost is quite an achievement. --Aidin Vaziri
