Review

Several of the tracks on Lanterna's self-titled debut would not sound out of place in your average dance club on goth night. "Turbine," in particular, reminds one very strongly of the Cure, and the ambient ballad "1985" has a heavy backbeat you can dance to. Soundscapes and ballads seem to be Lanterna's strong point, and this album features several, all with evocative titles that give you some idea of what they sound like: "Dark Spring," "Passage," "Colossus," "End of the Tunnel," and "Ether Net" all sound pretty much like you'd expect. In contrast, "Dawn" is an experiment in electronic sounds, while "Dragon Season" reminds one strongly of Led Zeppelin's "Going to California". All in all, this album has a little bit of everything, whether you're interested in dancing, meditating, reading, or sleeping. -- Genevieve Williams
