Review

These were, alas, the only two Beethoven Piano Concertos Sviatoslav Richter ever performed. (What a Fourth Concerto he could have played!) There are fine studio recordings of both Concertos in stereo, the First on RCA Victor Gold Seal and the Third on Deutsche Grammophon (not currently available but probably coming in the Originals series). Richter's studio concerto recordings are usually very fine, but there's also some added intensity in his live performances. Three couplings of these Concertos played by Richter are currently available, all with different conductors. This one is probably the best all around, and even though the sound is mono, it's still quite fine. However you do it, you probably do want to hear this pianist play these pieces. --Leslie Gerber
