Review
Magnet is a Washington DC ensemble led by songwriter and music fan Mark Goodman. With production and instrumental assistance from Cracker's David Lowery, Magnet's third CD is a tuneful encounter filled with memorable melodies and sterling musicianship. While Goodman's Velvet Underground fixation has been supplanted by a poppier muse of late, Shark Bait includes two appearances by the legendary VU drummer, Maureen Tucker. David Lowery's powerful presence is felt all over this recording as he surrounds Goodman with other members of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven as well as musicians from the Silos, House of Freaks, and Sparklehorse. Goodman's voice is gently engaging and his songs are both intelligent and personal. Well crafted without sacrificing its rocking exterior, Shark Bait is a mature meeting of musical minds. --Mitch Myers
