Review

In terms of sheer fluency and facility on jazz guitar, Martin Taylor stands alone, making everything he commits to record worth hearing at some point. This 1999 Australian recording finds him paired off with a variety of Down Under talents on 15 of 17 cuts while the remaining cuts return to the solo technique that Taylor has near perfected. With eight different guests shuffling in and out, a lack of consistency is to be expected. At times, Taylor is clearly inspired by his collaborator, especially on the duets with horn players James Morrison (trumpet, trombone) and Bob Barnard (cornet); Barnard's relaxed swing stylings mesh very well with Taylor's graceful touch. The charmingly playful "Royal Garden Blues," featuring Taylor on mandolin and Ian Date on banjo, and the hard-driving bop of "Billie's Bounce," with fellow six-stringer Peter Zog, represent two of the set highlights despite being dramatically different in tone, style, and feeling. But even when the creative sparks don't fly, Taylor's exquisite accompaniment is always something to behold. --Marc Greilsamer Virtuoso guitarist Martin Taylor first came to prominence in the late 1970s through his collaborations with legendary violinist Stephane Grappelli. Now, he tours the world's concert halls with his dazzling live performances. Although inspired initially by Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, it was to be piano players, most notably Art Tatum and Bill Evans, who caught his imagination and set him on the path of developing his own individual style of solo playing!
