Review

This incredibly talented trio of Québec musicians and dancers has taken the world by storm. Their first album, “Matapat”, was nominated for a Juno award, and continuous touring and airplay has spread their infectious music far and wide. Like their first album on Borealis Records, “Petit fou” features imaginative arrangements of traditional and original instrumental tunes, and fantastic renditions of traditional French Canadian songs. While the band shows a healthy respect for the tradition, they continue to push the boundaries of the genre by incorporating elements of jazz, celtic, and world music. Highlights include the contagious “Le champ de pois/Le reel des cent larmes”, the hurdy-gurdy/slap-bass arrangement of “La jolie Rochelle”, the Arabic influenced “Sire le roi”, and the unbelievable fusion of French Canadian music with classical Indian tabla and vocals on “La vielle galope”. Produced by Bill Garrett, Simon Lepage, and Matapat, this album is sure to cement their reputation as three of today's finest contemporary interpreters of traditional French Canadian music.
