Review

No small feat, but jazz pianist Misha Mengelberg is the godfather of the entire Dutch improvisation scene (check out Kevin Whitehead's New Dutch Swing for the details). And on No Idea, he proves why. Mixing the familiar (a little George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk) with great improv skills and a rock-solid rhythm section (courtesy Greg Cohen and Joey Baron), the Misha Mengelberg Trio rollick through these tunes with a deft, adventurous touch. There's nothing standard here. --Jason VerlindeMengelberg, a Dutch pianist who once played with Eric Dolphy (and is now often associated with percussionist Han Bennink), is joined here by the all-star rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen for a cool, lyrical set of (mostly) standards that are graceful, intuitive, and swing with a Monkish air. Mengelberg isn't afraid to mix it up, either. His solos often twist themselves into complex, joyful knots of tone clusters that resolve with graceful, offhanded skill. A technically brilliant and thought-provoking release. --S. DudaWith Greg Cohen (Bass) and Joey Baron (Drums). 20bit Recording.
