Review

Columbus, Ohio's Moviola prove that you don't need lots of fancy gear to make a catchy album. Its fifth release, Rumors of the Faithful is a lo-fi recording of guitars, bass, light percussion, and a mix of handclaps, accordion, and slide guitar. It comes off like front-porch indie-rock. You can almost picture the four Moviola members as they shift around on weathered chairs, sharing songwriting ability like a six-pack of the Midwest's finest beer. Coming off like a hushed Luna meeting Neutral Milk Hotel for a jam session on Neil Young's acreage, the band spreads its pastoral folk-pop over slow-moving stories of people falling in and out of their lives. Rumors is an album for warm summer nights in wide-open spaces, mixing genuine warmth and poetic lyrics with an innocent, almost old-fashioned stab at the modern alt-country/indie-folk mix. --Jennifer Maerz
